Maharani Mancanagara. Profile image from SINDO News
Maharani Mancanagara graduated from Institut Teknologi Bandung, Faculty of Art and Design, majoring in printmaking. Primarily working in the mediums of print, mixed media and drawing, her works explore Indonesia’s history. From ancient times to the present, her work is based on her personal and family experiences.
Ideas arise within our natural consciousness in the present, while history connects us to the past. This is a key component of Maharani’s storytelling, from the outer realm of popular documented history, to the reconstruction of memories.
Taking her personal background, Maharani grew her interest upon visualising the long history of education in Indonesia – a part of history left on artefacts from her late grandfather’s possessions. Maharani then aimed to express these belongings to a work of art, a path she took in identifying herself which she hopes could provide recognition for a larger sphere of people with similar backgrounds.
