Kelly Jin Mei, also known as Kelly Limerick, is a Singaporean self-taught artist primarily working with crochet and knit, which she has been practicing since 1997. Jin Mei creates textile works with an emphatic focus on her medium’s materiality as well as its histories and applications. Much of her work explores ideas of duality, and how a word, textile, or vessel may hold multiple meanings and perspectives.
Today, her work ranges from soft sculptures, textile hangings to multi-media installations. She has been active internationally with residencies such as La Wayaka Current (Desert), exhibited at the #4 Objet Textile Biennale in France and ART SG 2024, and been commissioned by brands like Bloomberg and GUCCI, for which she created their first in-store artwall display in South Asia Pacific. She has appeared in Singaporean campaigns promoting local art, been profiled by media such as Harper’s Bazaar (SG) and listed in Prestige (SG)’s 40 under 40. Jin Mei has also been invited to speak about her art at both local and foreign schools and institutions.
Some of Jin Mei’s most recognisable and recent work is her sculpture, particularly her vessels. In this series she pushes the medium of crochet to its limits to create vases which reference traditional forms of different cultures, morphing them through techniques, including melting and installation, to reveal glimpses of their interiors.
